Policy Dialogue
Land for Life Initiative Sierra Leone continues to play a leading role in shaping national land policy and legislative reforms through evidence-based advocacy and inclusive stakeholder engagement. Working in collaboration with selected civil society organizations (CSOs), the Initiative developed and published a detailed Parliamentary Brief in 2021. This policy document presented critical recommendations to Members of Parliament for the review of the land bills introduced in October 2021.
The Parliamentary Brief was informed by outcomes from extensive district-level consultations held across Land for Life’s operational districts. These engagements provided valuable insights from community stakeholders—ensuring that the perspectives of traditional authorities, women, youth, and local land users were reflected in the national policy discourse.
Land for Life’s consistent participation in high-level advocacy and policy dialogues significantly contributed to the enactment of two landmark legislations: the Customary Land Rights Act, 2022 and the National Land Commission Act, 2022. These laws mark a historic milestone in Sierra Leone’s land governance framework, promoting transparency, equity, and the protection of customary land rights.
Guided by its 2022–2026 Strategic Plan, Land for Life has prioritized the full implementation of these new land laws. The Initiative continues to engage with government institutions, local authorities, and communities to raise awareness, strengthen institutional capacity, and ensure that the provisions of the laws are effectively operationalized across the country. Through continuous dialogue, research, and collaboration, Land for Life remains committed to advancing inclusive, accountable, and people-centered land governance in Sierra Leone.
